LinguAIst is a browser extension that translates and improves text using an AI provider selected by the user.
LinguAIst does not operate a backend service that receives the text you submit for translation or improvement.
Requests are sent directly from the browser extension to the selected AI provider.
Depending on the feature you use, LinguAIst may process:
For supported sites, a context adapter may read limited surrounding content needed to improve the requested result. For example, the Gmail adapter may use the email subject and recent visible messages as context for an improvement request.
Selected text is sent to the selected AI provider when LinguAIst performs a translation or improvement.
When contextual assistance is enabled, the request may also contain limited surrounding page content relevant to that request.
LinguAIst does not send page content to a LinguAIst-operated server.
LinguAIst supports OpenAI API keys, custom OpenAI-compatible endpoints, and OpenRouter connections using browser authorization with PKCE. OpenRouter supplies a user-controlled API key after authorization.
ChatGPT account sign-in is experimental. A temporary session rule captures only the exact loopback callback and random state in its dedicated auth tab. The rule is removed after success, failure, cancellation, tab closure or timeout. Chrome AI, Puter, and OpenCode Free are experimental or unavailable; selecting them does not send page text to those services.
Data sent to a connected provider is subject to that provider's terms and privacy practices.
Credentials are stored separately per provider in extension local storage. Both local and session storage are restricted to trusted extension contexts. Content scripts receive sanitized settings through messaging.
Pending PKCE transactions use session storage and expire after ten minutes. Disconnect removes local credentials and pending authorization, but does not revoke access at the provider. Local storage is not protection against a compromised browser profile.
Preferences and authentication state remain in the browser profile until removed. Credentials are not included in ordinary extension settings or error messages.
LinguAIst does not sell user data.
The current version does not use submitted page content for advertising or cross-site behavioral profiling.
LinguAIst uses broad webpage access because its core functionality is designed to work directly with text on arbitrary websites.
Broad access allows the extension to detect user-selected text, work with editable fields, provide inline translation and writing assistance, and contact the selected AI endpoint.
LinguAIst does not maintain a LinguAIst-operated server-side store of submitted page content.
Retention by the selected AI provider, if any, is governed by that provider's policies and the user's agreement with that provider.
This policy may be updated when LinguAIst functionality or data handling changes. Material changes will be reflected in this document and its effective date.
